Maria McCloy

Headlines of entertainment, fashion, and arts stalwart Maria McCloy have left a vibrating effect in South Africa’s culture scene, with the Gauteng Provincial Government describing her as a pioneering force in South Africa’s arts and entertainment sector. Maria Podesta

The beloved hit track by 2000s vocalist Joe Nina was famously thought to have inspired him to pen one of his highly successful tracks, Ding Dong. The pair met for McCloy’s 50th birthday party, where the singer celebrated the hit. McCloy also shared in a radio interview that she took on the “Podesta” nickname a year after it was released.

Maria the Stylist

Maria McCloy didn't just design fashion, she curated a cultural dialogue. Her work was a vibrant collision of her global upbringing. Inspired by everything from the ancient Zenana palaces of Rajasthan to the 90s Kwaito hits of Joe Nina, she eventually realized that her brand didn't need a sharp label, it simply needed her name. This was so that when people see her signature clutches, earrings, and garments, they could be instantly recognized as "Maria McCloy."

Her aesthetic was defined by a fearless use of African prints, specifically Seshoeshoe, Ankara, and Kente, her fashion line also fused Tsonga, Zulu, and Ndebele beading, which she transformed into contemporary, "gender-bending" accessories and street-style silhouettes.

McCloy leaves behind her mother and two sisters, Thandiwe and Natasha, as well as extended family, friends, and colleagues across South Africa’s entertainment industry. The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss. She was widely regarded as a trailblazer in South Africa’s creative industry, particularly in the early years of democracy, when she helped amplify African creative voices across the continent and internationally.

Over her career, she worked as a DJ, publicist, and fashion designer, earning a reputation as a dynamic multidisciplinary artist who moved fluidly between music, fashion, and media.

Her passing has been widely described within the industry as a significant loss to South Africa’s cultural landscape.

Details of her memorial and funeral service will be announced at a later stage.
