Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called for an independent coroner's inquest into the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila, arguing that the circumstances surrounding her death at the residence of the Minister of Works raise serious questions. The call comes amid renewed public attention following separate allegations made by another woman relating to the minister.
Calls for an independent investigation into the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila have intensified after human rights activist Omoyele Sowore urged authorities to order a coroner's inquest before her burial.
Sowore argued that the reported circumstances of Habila's death at the residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, warrant a thorough and transparent investigation. According to him, reports that blood was seen flowing from her mouth raise questions that should be resolved through a full autopsy and other forensic examinations before any burial takes place.
"Mary Habila died with blood flowing from her mouth, which suggests that her death is unnatural," Sowore said, while calling on authorities to ensure all necessary forensic procedures are completed and any investigation is conducted independently.
The activist also cautioned against what he described as any attempt to rush the burial before the cause of death is conclusively established.
The renewed calls come as another woman has publicly shared allegations relating to an encounter with the Minister of Works. Those allegations have attracted attention on social media, although they remain separate from the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila's death and have not been independently verified by TWOMN.
As public interest in both matters grows, pressure is mounting on the relevant authorities to establish the facts through a transparent, impartial, and evidence-based investigation.
At the time of publication, the Minister of Works has not publicly responded to the latest allegations or to Sowore's call for a coroner's inquest.
